ex-FAT for Windows XP

August 25th, 2010 Rabi Poudel No comments

exFAT (Extended File Allocation Table), (also sometimes referred to as FAT64) is a proprietary file system suited especially for USB flash drives, introduced by Microsoft for embedded devices in Windows Embedded CE 6.0, in their desktop operating systems. exFAT can be used where the NTFS file system is not a feasible solution, due to data structure overhead, or where the file size or directory restrictions of previous versions of the FAT file system (32 GB drive and 4 GB file size limitations) are unacceptable.

It comes pre-installed in Windows Vista (SP 1), Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008. But exFAT isn’t native to Windows XP (Windows Server 2003 also) – which the vast majority of you are probably still running. Microsoft has released KB955704 to address the issue. You can simply download the package and install to get exFAT support installed in your XP machine and you’ll be able to seamlessly work with exFAT partitions in XP.

Notepad++ – versatile text editor

August 22nd, 2010 Rabi Poudel No comments

Notepad++ is a versatile text editor and source code editor for Windows.  One main advantage of Notepad++ over the built-in Windows text editor, Notepad, is tabbed editing, to easily work with multiple open files.

Notepad++ is a windows Notepad replacement with an eye toward programmers, although it should also appeal to the casual user who wants a cross between Notepad and WordPad. Notepad++ has some noticeable differences from WordPad. Support for tabs is key, letting users manage different documents simultaneously. Line-numbering is important, too, a feature that nobody mucking about in C should be without.

Pros:

  • Supports syntax coloration of numerous languages.
  • Easy to use and great interface.
  • Almost endless possibilities to edit and customize.
  • Allows FTP connection.
  • Tabbed interface is great.
  • Integrates seamlessly into windows explorer.
  • Free and open source product.
  • Great collection of plugins.
  • Macro recording and execution.
  • Powerful regular expression text search and replace.

Cons:

  • VERY annoying software update nag notification.
  • Not cross platform (only Windows binaries are released).
  • Is very slow with large files.
  • Newer version does not have the ability to view hexadecimal files.
  • Does not have “Column Mode”.

Overall, Notepad++ is a great replacement for Notepad. It has tons of options, even some features which you could only expect to find in a paid-for IDE, yet it still starts in mere miliseconds. Not to mention – when it starts it loads all your tabs (yes, tabbed-documents, just like your favorite browser) just as they were when you closed.

Open Source Essentials for Windows

August 18th, 2010 Rabi Poudel No comments

Free and open-source software is good for you and for the world. Here is some best Windows software that we know of.

1. Mozilla Firefox:

If you haven’t switched to Firefox for your web browsing needs, do it now. It stops annoying popups and it has tons of amazing plugins that can make surfing the web even better. I could evangelize all day about Firefox, but one thing’s for sure: the first thing I do on any new Windows machine is run Internet Explorer just long enough to download Firefox.

2. Mozilla Thunderbird:

Thunderbird is an email client that has five big things going for it: it’s free, it’s full featured, it’s lightweight and runs quick, it has an unparalleled spam filter, and it protects you from those ridiculous phishing attacks by clearly indicating which emails send you to a bogus website. If you’re not already using a web-based email solution, Thunderbird should be your client.

3. OpenOffice:

If you want to replace the rest of the Office suite, your best bet is OpenOffice. It includes very nice replacements for Excel and PowerPoint (and workable replacements for Access and other Office elements). In fact, I actually prefer their Excel and PowerPoint replacements to the real thing.

4. Pidgin:

This is a very clean instant messaging program that allows you to be on AOL Instant Messenger, Windows (MSN) Messenger, Yahoo Messenger (and others) simultaneously with one program. There are other free packages that do this, but Pidgin is stable and clean and simple.

6. BitTorrent:

From their website, “BitTorrent is a peer-assisted, digital content delivery platform that provides the fastest, most efficient means of distributing, discovering, and consuming large, high-quality files on the Web. Our mission is simple: to deliver the content that entertains and informs the digital world.” In other words, BitTorrent allows you to download large media files and also use your bandwidth to help others download these files. Search for media files you want and download ‘em.

7. Free Download Manager:

Free Download Manager is a powerful, easy-to-use download accelerator and manager. This download utility is surprisingly attractive and full-featured for a freeware product, and its operation couldn’t be more straightforward.

9. Media Player Classic:

It is compact, but powerful media player. Plays anything under the sun. No install necessary. It comes bundled with K-Lite Codec Pack.

10. VLC Media Player:

If you get tired of having tons of media players on your computer, get this package that runs pretty much every media type you’ll run across without breaking a sweat.

11. 7-Zip:

It is open source Windows utility for manipulating archives. Formats 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR are supported fully, other formats can be unpacked.

13. PDF Creator:

PDFCreator creates a virtual printer on your computer that, if you print a document to it from any program, creates a PDF of that document that can be read on any computer with Acrobat Reader on it. After installing PDFCreator, all you have to do is print like normal and out comes a PDF!
